preview Caption: Simulated line emission from all galaxies more massive than the Small Magellanic Cloud in the redshift range z=1-1.1 in a field of about 2.0x2.4 arcmin2. This field covers 1/100,000 of the full field of view of the S3-SAX sky simulation (12x12 deg2 at z=1). The gradual coloring represents integrated fluxes per unit solid angle of the HI emission line (blue), the CO(1-0) line (yellow), and the CO(5-4) line (red).

preview Caption: Same as above, but the upper triangle shows the true simulated image, while the lower triangle has been smoothed on a scale of 5 arcsec to illustrate the resolution of a hypothetical SKA core with 20 km diameter operating at 700 MHz (HI line at z=1).

preview Caption: Movie showing the cosmic evolution of the surface densities of molecular (H2) and atomic (HI) hydrogen gas in Milky Way type galaxies in the S3-SAX simulation. The most notable feature is the strong increase of the H2 density with redshift z, which is due to the evolution of the pressure of the interstellar medium caused by the size evolution of the galaxy. The movie can be downloaded as MPEG, MOV, or WMV.

preview Caption: Mock observing cone representing a longitudinal cut through the S3-SAX sky simulation from z=0 to z=10. The colors represent HI-rich galaxies (blue) and H2-rich galaxies (red).
